FEMINIST CONSTITUTIONALISM INTEREST GROUP
The Interest Group on Feminist Constitutionalism seeks to promote sustained collaboration among scholars dedicated to critically analyzing constitutional law and theory from feminist perspectives.
In light of persistent gender inequalities and structural forms of exclusion embedded in constitutional texts, doctrines, and practices, feminist constitutionalism aims to interrogate and transform the normative foundations of public law.
The group focuses on two main lines of inquiry. The first is theoretical, engaging with the conceptual rearticulation of key constitutional categories—such as sovereignty, legitimacy, authority, democracy, rights, and the public/private divide—through feminist, queer, and intersectional lenses. The second is grounded in comparative and critical praxis, examining how feminist constitutional thought informs institutional design, legal interpretation, judicial decision-making, constitution-making processes, and social movements across diverse jurisdictions.
Topics of particular interest include the constitutionalization of reproductive justice; the development of feminist and decolonial critiques of the rule of law; gender-sensitive mechanisms for democratic representation; the transformation of constitutional adjudication through gender equality jurisprudence and feminist hermeneutics; and the articulation of new principles for state legitimacy rooted in -although not exclusively- care, interdependence, and substantive equality.
The group aims to foster collaborative research, publications, and dialogue across jurisdictions and disciplines, and to contribute to the broader transformation of public law towards inclusivity, equality, and justice.
