About

The ICON•S Ecuador Chapter is a national branch of the International Society of Public Law (ICON•S), dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary discussions on public law in Ecuador. It serves as a platform for scholars, professionals, and academics to engage in legal debates related to constitutional law, administrative law, international law, and global legal developments. The chapter is committed to promoting democratic values, justice, and governance within Ecuador’s legal and academic community.

Objectives & Mission

The mission of the ICON•S Ecuador Chapter is to:

  • Promote constitutional values such as democracy, equality, justice, accountability, and good governance.
  • Encourage legal research and discussions through an interdisciplinary approach involving academics, judges, practitioners, and policymakers.
  • Strengthen the visibility and influence of Ecuadorian legal scholarship within international and transnational legal debates.
  • Support young academics from the Global South, ensuring their integration into ICON•S networks.
  • Foster collaboration with other legal and academic organizations while maintaining independence in governance.

Manifesto

The ICON•S Ecuador Chapter Manifesto reflects its commitment to:

  • Defending constitutional principles that uphold democracy, human rights, and rule of law.
  • Ensuring diversity and inclusion, recognizing multiple social identities (ethnicity, gender, political affiliation, socio-economic status, disability, etc.).
  • Encouraging open and pluralistic legal debates, embracing a broad vision of equality in law and policy.
  • Developing a community of scholars and practitioners engaged in legal and governance issues at both national and global levels.
  • Supporting the dissemination of knowledge, organizing events, and publishing legal research to enhance the understanding of public law in Ecuador.

Principles

The Chapter operates under the following guiding principles:

  • Accountability – Ensuring transparency in decision-making and governance.
  • Diversity and Inclusion – Promoting gender balance, social equity, and broad participation in public law discussions.
  • Good Governance – Adopting fair and democratic processes in its internal structures.
  • Collaboration – Engaging with global and regional legal communities to strengthen Ecuador’s academic and institutional contributions.
  • Merit-based Membership – Encouraging the participation of qualified scholars and practitioners in Ecuador’s legal field.

Governance

The governance structure of the ICON•S Ecuador Chapter consists of three main bodies:

Executive Committee (EC)

  • Composed of 7 members (five full members, one liaison with the Advisory Council, and one Executive Secretary).
  • Term duration: Three years per EC member.
  • Key functions:
    • Organizing activities and annual conferences.
    • Approving new members by absolute majority.
    • Ensuring communication with ICON•S and the Ecuadorian academic community.
    • Rotating the Executive Secretary (ES) position between genders every two years.

Advisory Council (AC)

  • Composed of 10 members (nine full members and one liaison with the EC).
  • Term duration: Two years for AC members, one year for the liaison.
  • Key functions:
    • Providing oversight and strategic direction for the Chapter.
    • Coordinating with the EC on events, membership, and policy decisions.
    • Suggesting the incorporation of new members.

Founding Committee

  • Honorary members who played a role in establishing the ICON•S Ecuador Chapter.
  • No active governance role, but they may offer guidance and support to the Chapter.

How to Become Involved With Our Chapter

Membership is open to legal scholars, judges, practitioners, and academics with expertise in constitutional, administrative, or international law.

To join, individuals must:

  • Be affiliated with an Ecuadorian university, public institution, or a law firm specializing in public law.
  • Be supported by three existing Executive Committee members.
  • Undergo a review process by the Executive Committee (EC), which evaluates applications twice a year.
