The right to freedom of expression has particularly broad protection in the Inter-American system of human rights. The American Convention is the most generous treaty worldwide. In developing this normative framework, the Inter-American system has produced an important doctrine that has had a notable impact in the region during the first decade of this century. Faced with the democratic backlash in the region in the last decade, these standards have served as a barrier of resistance to empty the protection of the right to freedom of expression. In some cases, authoritarianism has been successful, but in others, the doctrine of the Inter-American system has served as an apical barrier of resistance. That is what this conference is about.
We look forward to welcoming you on July 3-5, 2023 for our Annual Conference entitled "Islands and Ocean: Public Law in a Plural World." The conference will take place at the Victoria University of Wellington, in New Zealand. We will be announcing more details about the conference soon, including financial support to early career and global south scholars!
